How to Build a Two-Bedroom Townhouse? Make It Square!
By Matt Chaban
January 3, 2011
The 19th Century brownstone at 132 East 38th Street looks normal enough from the outside, a more than generous 20-foot-wide Manhattan home. But inside, the quirkiness becomes clear, as the building’s dimensions are revealed to be almost square. To solve this challenged layout, the owners have created one of the more distinct houses in the city—it’s actually one of five such homes designed by Abraham B. Embury on the block.
Enter the home and be greeted by the kitchen and dining room, the living room the floor above that, then the master bedroom topped by the second bedroom and a dainty roof deck above that. “Its square jewel box layout is both inviting and unpretentious,”
the Vandenberg listing notes. And, as with so many other unusual homes, it’s a steal, recently relisted for $2.695 million after asking $3.85 million last year.
Call this one the stairmaster.
